The Evolution of Exercise
What is your relationship with exercise like?
If you’re like me, you may have had a love/hate relationship with it over the years. As a kid, it’s all about having fun! Playing sports, chasing your friends, doing cartwheels, etc. No agenda, no worrying, just pure enjoyment of moving your body.
Then as you get older you learn about how exercise is healthy and can make you lose weight, which seemingly everyone wants to do. Which makes you think that you should too. You start to realize there is SO much pressure on women especially to look a certain way, and yet that seems to be a moving target.
Be thin, but not too skinny. Be strong, but not too muscular. Be curvy, but not too much!
It’s a never-ending cycle.
My relationship with movement has changed drastically over the years, and I thought I’d share because I know some of y’all will relate.
All throughout childhood and high school, my main focus was sports. I wasn’t thinking about trying to be smaller, get stronger, or even be healthier! I just wanted to play sports because I loved them, so I really enjoyed exercise then because it was FUN.
Then when I got to college it started to shift, still focusing on volleyball, but also noticing that I wasn’t as small as some of my friends. I’ve always had a bigger booty & legs, which I attribute to genetics & being in a squat position for volleyball most of my life. So that is when I started using exercise as a means to get smaller. Which, spoiler alert: I didn’t have any weight to lose. If anything I was too small because I was undiagnosed Celiac and wasn’t absorbing any of the food I was eating.
Fast forward to after college, I went through what I think a lot of college athletes do when they’re no longer playing. A little bit of an identity crisis, mixed with pure joy of not having to wake up at 5 am for workouts. After having someone tell you what to do in a workout for many years, it’s both freeing & terrifying to not have that anymore. So I’d mostly just run on the treadmill, go to spin class, or try and copy some of the workouts I remembered from college. And let me tell you NONE of that was fun.
Meanwhile, I’m trying to figure out my health challenges and have zero energy to work out anyways. So I thought it was a good idea to do CrossFit. HA! Not that I was a die-hard crossfitter, but my husband taught classes and so I’d tag along sometimes just to get my butt kicked and leave feeling like I got hit by a truck. Not my brightest moments.
But what I will say is that CrossFit did instill a LOVE of strength training for me. Even when I lifted weights in college, I didn’t really enjoy it. It wasn’t fun so I didn’t want to continue after I left. But learning how to do pushups and pullups was one of the most empowering things and I was immediately hooked.
After stopping CrossFit, I was obsessed with doing bodyweight strength training at home because it wasn’t too hard on my body, I didn’t need any equipment, and it made me feel so strong and more confident than I’d ever been. I started to look at my lower half as powerful instead of being embarrassed. I started to love seeing muscles in the mirror instead of wondering if I was “too bulky”.
Then all I wanted to do was share this newfound love with other women because I had finally brought the joy back into exercise. I learned that fun, quick workouts are WAY more sustainable for adult life because let’s face it, we don’t have the same amount of free time (or energy!) that we used to.
Which is exactly why I created Fit from Home in 90 Days. I love this program so much because it is a true representation of my story and the time when I fell in love with movement again.
I no longer feel that I have to move for anyone but me. I work out because it feels good, because I like being strong, because it gives me energy, and because of the confidence it gives me. And I want that for you, too!
